“Thank God I CHANGED CAMP!”

In less than 12 hours from now, it will be exactly 21 years ago when a freshman in college CHANGED CAMP! The Holy Bible says, God rescued us from dead-end alleys and dark dungeons. He’s set us up in the kingdom of the Son he loves so much, the Son who got us out of the pit we were in, got rid of the sins we were doomed to keep repeating (Colossian 1:12-14). Psalm 40:2-4 also says, “He drew me up out of a horrible pit [a pit of tumult and of destruction], out of the miry clay (froth and slime), and set my feet upon a rock, steadying my steps and establishing my goings. And He has put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many shall see and fear (revere and worship) and put their trust and confident reliance in the Lord. Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) is the man who makes the Lord his refuge…”

The two passages above summarizes the dramatic journey of my life before July 10th, 1994 and the happenings around me from that day. I have shared the story before but I can’t stop sharing it because it’s my STORY that eventually becomes HIS STORY. Up until July 9th, 1994, there was a LAW in operation in my life, it is called the LAW OF SIN AND DEATH. That law kept me at the backside of nowhere, without hope, in sickness, in immoral lifestyle and of course in darkness (ignorance). Many of my friends who knew me before July 10, 1994 were quick to testify that something HAPPENED to me after that day. Like this great nation (America) still remember July 4th 1776 with great celebration and appreciation to those who contributed to liberation from Great Britain, I’m eternally grateful to Pastor Olubi Johnson for his message on ‘Spiritual Time Management’ on that Sunday morning. Even though I could not understand most of the things he was saying, the only thing I heard was, “The Spirit and the Bride is calling, would you come?” It was an invitation to the palace of the King. It was an invitation for a change of CAMP!  It was an invitation that was to alter my life’s course! It was an invitation to come out of ordinary, powerless lifestyle! It was an invitation to be controlled by another law – THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT of LIFE in Christ Jesus. Oh, I’m glad I honored that invitation.

It will be surprising to know that I did not set out on that day to attend Pastor Olubi’s church but going somewhere else with a friend.
20 years after with Pastor OJ in Nigeria

With my friend in '96
We already walked pass Pastor Olubi’s church when I had a problem with my shoe. I decided I was going back to campus, because one of the “missions” we were going to accomplish at this other place will be messed up without a good shoe. The moment we were about to pass the exit to SPCC, my friend persuaded me that we should go to this nearby church. Even though he was much as far away from God as I was at that time, he persuaded me!
From that day at Scripture Pasture Christian Center (SPCC), back to my room at E9A, South Campus (The Polytechnic Ibadan), the journey continued to Christian Union (Poly Ibadan), to Covenant Partners Fellowship (Poly Ibadan), to End-Time Triumphant Church (Ibadan), to NCCF (Bayelsa State Chapter), to Ibadan Varsity Christian Union (Postgraduate Fellowship), to Victory Chapel (Bishop Adelakun’s church), to Overcomers Christian Center (Columbus Ohio), to New Season Assembly (Columbus Ohio). And to all the ministers, friends, colleagues, ministries (audio, video, print media etc.) that has in one way or another contributed (and still contributing) to my pursuit of HIM that first pursued me, I say, Thanks for giving to the Lord. I don’t plan to recover from what happened to me on July 10, 1994 because my life is BLESSED because of it.

Friends, I appreciate you reading this story. If you have not made a decision to “change CAMP”, I encourage you to do so today. Jesus is the answer for your “troubled world”. If you are already in the CAMP, keep following HARD after Him. Shalom!

Fond Memories in Appreciation of the journey with the King so far.

WHEN NIGERIA TEACHES AMERICA

      WHEN NIGERIA TEACHES AMERICA.
    By Pastor Sunday Adelaja.

It sounds like a fantasy or a fairytale, but this is the kind of fairy tale that could soon become a reality. WHEN NIGERIA TEACHES AMERICA!
The United States of America, the most powerful nation on earth, which controls one quarter of the world’s economy, stands so tall that it doesn’t look possible for an African nation to be able to teach them anything, at least in the near 100 years. Anybody who has been to the United States or lived there would tell you that their colossal status in the world is not by accident. Surely, America is a great nation.

Let’s check out some statistics about the United States of America:
    1. America is the father of our modern democracy.
    2. America was the first to put a man on the moon.
    3. Coca cola, the world’s most known soft-drink product comes from America.
    4. America created the modern movie industry Hollywood.
    5. America is the mother of the modern day technological age: Microsoft, Google, Yahoo,
        Apple, Internet, Facebook, Twitter etc.
    6. America is a land of opportunities and equality.
    7. America is a country of religious liberty.
    8. They are the inventors of the airplane through the Wright Brothers.
    9. The American dollar is the most popular and most traded currency in the world.
    10. America has produced the highest amount of Nobel Prize Winners in history- 270

I can guess what is going on in your mind. What is Pastor Sunday after? How is this guy going to write his way out of this? How is he going to top what is already stated to make Nigeria teach America? Ok, here we go.

Let’s start with the event of recent weeks. James Entwistle is an American Ambassador to Nigeria. After being an observer and a witness at Nigeria’s last elections, he made a remarkable statement that could signal to the greatness Nigeria possesses as a nation.
Despite our inadequacies and failures, even in the recently concluded elections, the Hon. Mr. Ambassador still made this compelling statement.

“I am very impressed by the decision of INEC to use technology in this election. The Permanent Voter Cards are very high-tech, they are more high tech than my voter card from the state of Virginia in the US. My voter card does not have biometric. It does not have my fingerprint. The high-tech gives the process more integrity. I congratulate INEC on taking the part of High-tech. I think we need to come and study it so that we can use it in my country.”

Could this be the proverbial cloud in the sky in the shape of a man’s hand that made Elijah to outrun King Ahab’s chariot? (1kings 18:44, 46).
Brethren, I see a picture of things to come for our beloved nation. Somehow I can see afar off, a day when Nigeria would arise as the leader of the black race, that will one day outrun the technologically advanced nations of the first world including America. Mr. James Entwistle might not have had this in mind when he simply pointed out a visible fact during Nigeria’s last election, but beyond the visible, God sometimes allows us to perceive in the spirit things that are to come.

To anyone that has ears, let him hear today that America would eventually be referred to as the SETTING SUN, while the most populous black nation on earth would soon be referred to as the RISING SUN (Star).
Glimpses of this truth abound for those who have eyes to see. Allow me to share with you some of those facts that are already visible for everyone to see.

    1. A big news hit the news rooms of the world media in the first quarter of 2015. Stars were born. Munira Khalif from Minnesota, Stephan Stoykov from Indiana, Victor Agbafe from North Carolina and Harold Ekeh from New York got multiple admission offers in all eight Ivy League schools in the United States of America: Brown University, Colombia University, Cornell University, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, Preston University and Yale University.
This type of feat is recorded yearly in the United States of America. A semester before, Kwasi Enin, 17, a Ghanaian immigrant attained the same height. Still a few years earlier another Nigerian prodigy Saheela Ibraheem, attained the same height and ended up going to Harvard at 15. She is regarded as one of the 50 smartest teenagers in the world. She was treated to a dinner by no less a person than the President of the United States himself Barack Obama.
What makes this story of interest today is that, of the four outstanding students this year, TWO OF THEM ARE NIGERIANS, while all four are immigrants. Victor Agbafe and Harold Ekeh where born to Nigerian parents. This goes to prove my point that Nigeria is the rising star of the future world. While the fact that all the prodigies are immigrants shows that America is taking a nose dive and is becoming the setting star of the future.

    2. America is a melting pot where all nations and tribes under the sun collate. Hardly can you find a better platform to access practically every nation on earth.
Friends, listen to this NIGERIAN IMMIGRANTS HAVE THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF EDUCATION IN HOUSTON AND IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA IN GENERAL, surpassing whites and Asians, according to a Census data bolstered by an analysis of 13 annual Houston-area surveys, the Houston Chronicle reports. According to a 2006 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau, 17 percent of all Nigerians in the US hold a Master’s degree, 4 percent hold a doctorate and 37 percent have a bachelor’s degree. In comparison, 8% of the white population in the U.S. hold a Master’s degree, 1% hold a doctorate and 19% have a bachelor’s degree.

Let’s face it, the education facilities in Nigerian schools, from Primary School to University level are inferior to that of the US. Also, the level of preparations in Nigerian universities is relatively low. Students are trained to know what is in the book. The practical area is weak, but in spite of all that, when a Nigerian leaves our substandard schools to a very competitive school environment like America they still beat the rest of the world to it.
For all these Nigerians to excel in a very competitive society and environment like America, it goes a long way to point out the potential of our people.

    3. My third argument is simply put, DR. PHILIP EMEAGWALI.
Inventor of the World's Fastest Computer: Emeagwali used 65,000 processors to invent the world's fastest computer, which performs computations at 3.1 billion calculations per second.
Dr. Philip Emeagwali's resume is loaded with many other such feats, including ways of making oil fields more productive – which has resulted in the United States saving hundreds of millions of dollars each year. As one of the most famous African-American inventors of the 20th century, Dr. Emeagwali also has won the Gordon Bell Prize – the Nobel Prize for computation. His computers are currently being used to forecast the weather and to predict the likelihood and effects of future global warming.
I have no doubt in my heart that given the same opportunity as Dr. Emeagwali, there are many more Nigerians that would perform as well if not better. Our land abounds with millions of Emeagwalis. Nigeria surely can teach the world.

    4. Another reason why I believe Nigeria is the rising star of the future is in what the rest of the world would refuse to believe. WHO COULD HAVE BELIEVED THAT A NIGERIAN OWNS THE SECOND LARGEST INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT IN ALL OF GREAT BRITAIN? Here is the story:
Up until February 2010, very few people had heard about Adebayo Ogunlesi. The Nigerian-born investment banker and money manager made international headlines when he led the acquisition of London’s Gatwick Airport from the British Airports Authority in a recorded £1.51 billion deal. The acquisition instantly propelled Ogunlesi, 58, into the global spotlight and earned him a place in history as the man who acquired London’s second largest international airport.
Adebayo Ogunlesi is the chairman and managing partner of Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), a New York-based independent private equity fund focused primarily on infrastructural investments, with over $5.6 billion under his management. The purchase of Gatwick Airport may have grabbed all the headlines, but GIP has some other noteworthy assets in its portfolio including a 75% stake in London City Airport, and Biffa Limited, a UK based waste management company.
Can you notice a repeating tendency that most of these outstanding Nigerians are based outside Nigeria? This explains the reason why I am so passionate about making Nigeria work. The amount of Nigerians outside the country is less than 1 percent of those in the country, yet we are having such a global impact on the world. What would happen if we fix Nigeria’s problems? What will happen if we give similar opportunities to the rest 99 percent of Nigerians living in the country? What kind of result would we then be producing?
Nigeria indeed can teach the rest of the world!

    5. WHEN A NIGERIAN MADE DOLL OUTSELLS BARBIE, NOW THAT IS A REVOLUTION!
As Barbie sales continue to plummet, another doll is aiming to slide in and take her place. The Queens of Africa and Naija Princess dolls are outselling Mattel's original. The dolls' mastermind, 43-year-old Taofick Okoya, told Reuters that he sells between 6,000 and 9,000 dolls per month, claiming 10 to 15 percent of the small, but growing toy market in Nigeria.
That reminds me of the analogy we gave above about the SUN SET and the SUN RISE. For anybody that cares to listen, Nigeria is going to be known as the rising star of the future world!

    6. The sixth Reason why Nigeria is going to be the Rising star of the future world is because THE SMARTEST FAMILY IN THE WORLD IS NIGERIAN.
The BBC called the Imafidon family, Britain’s brainiest family and members of that family feature in most of the major media in Britain. Most recently in the premier business magazine in the world, Forbes. All five children, now ages 12- 24 have demonstrated incredible mental abilities in all domains. From music, to mathematics, to athletics. The youngest, the twins Peter and Paula passed the British high school mathematics examination at 6 and the Cambridge University advance mathematics examination, which most Harvard and Stanford seniors will have trouble with at age 8.
The oldest child Anne-Maria was the youngest ever to graduate from Oxford with a Master’s degree in both mathematics and computer science and is now the youngest vice president of a Fortune 500 Company, Deutche Bank.
Another member of the family is in the leadership of the most powerful bank in the world Golden Sachs. The two immediate children, Christina and Samantha also passed the most difficult mathematical examinations in Britain before age 10. If one were to ask a statistician what are the odds that one family will produce 5 extraordinary geniuses, his answer would have to be about 1 out of 8 billion since it has never happened before.
Dear readers, now I hope you are beginning to agree with me that Nigeria is on its way to teach the rest of the world?

    7. Most people know the name Aliko Dangote, but not too many people know that the best has not yet been heard about Dangote. This man is a visionary extraordinaire. He plans to glorify Nigeria and put her on the world stage in grand style.
Dangote is poised to make his Nigerian based company the number one producers of cement in the world. Dangote Cement is a fully integrated cement company and has projects and operations in Nigeria and 14 other African countries; Dangote Cement's current total production capacity in Nigeria from its three existing cement plants (Obajana 10.25MMTPA, Ibese 6.0MMTPA and Gboko 4.0MMTPA) is 20.25MMTPA.
The Obajana Cement Plant (OCP) located in Kogi State is reputed to be one of the single largest cement plants in the world with a combined capacity of 10.25MMTPA.
A fourth line which add 3.0MMTPA to the existing capacity will bring the total capacity of Obajana to 13.25MMTPA by 2015.
Dangote Cement is also the biggest quoted company in West Africa and the only Nigerian company on the Forbes Global 2000 Companies.
Dear friends, I so much believe in Nigeria. My reasons are not just because of emotions and sentiments. I mean, my believe is not because I come from Nigeria myself. Believe me I have traveled the world and I can tell you for a fact, there are no people like Nigerians. This is not about pride or arrogance, this is raw facts out of my interactions with people from almost every nation on earth. That is why nobody would make me keep quiet until we address and fix our vices as a nation. Because I want to see the full potential of Nigeria realized in my generation.

    8. Another reason why Nigeria is the rising star of the future world is THE PHENOMENAL GROWTH OF THE NIGERIAN BANKS.
Thirteen Nigerian banks have been listed among the Leading 1000 Global Banks as published by The Banker magazine of the Financial Times Group in its 2014 edition.
The Nigerian banks that made the ranking based on Tier-1 capital are Zenith Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, First Bank, Access Bank, United Bank for Africa, Fidelity Bank and Ecobank Nigeria. Others are Skye Bank, First City Monument Bank, Diamond Bank, Stanbic IBTC Holdings, Standard Chartered Bank Nigeria and Union Bank of Nigeria.
The report, which listed 13 Nigerian banks that made the ranking, underlines Nigeria’s financial sector’s leading position in Africa as no other African country has up to 13 banks in the Top 1000 World listing of banks.
According to the report, Zenith Bank ranked top in Nigeria at 293 in the world. Guaranty Trust is number 415 in the world. First Bank is number 424 in the world. Access Bank is number 532. United Bank for Africa ranked 539. And Fidelity ranked 622 position.
I don’t have any doubt in my heart that with an increase in stability of our economic and political life, our banks could only rank higher and higher. The sky is the limit for the future of Nigeria and Africa as a whole.

    9. The best bet Nigeria has to lead the world however, is in her young people, which she has in abundance. The trend seems to be whenever Nigerians are given the right environment to function, they tend to exceed their contemporaries and colleagues. I would like to mention a few stories of outstanding young individuals who left the shores of Nigeria to become the best in the various nations they found themselves in.

    I. A 22-year-old Nigerian, Emmanuel Ohuabunwa, made history at John Hopkins University, United States of America. Ohuabunwa from Arochukwu, Abia State, did the nation proud by becoming the first black man to make a Grade Point Average of 3.98 out of 4.0 to bag a degree in Neurosciences in the university. He was also adjudged as having the highest honors during the graduation that was held on May 24 that year.
II. A genius could be referred to as an exceptional child who is academically sound. But, how would you describe an individual who never misses a point in his examinations from first year in the university to the final year? If there is any adjective to qualify such a person, that word could best describe Tunji Olu-Taiwo, an Engineering student of Eastern Mediterranean University in the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus who obtained 4.0 CGPA out of 4.0 CGPA, the first ever in the department.
III. Over the past five years, Nigerian students at the Russian National Research Medical University have consistently topped the graduation chat, bagging honors and contributing their wealth of knowledge to the University’s academic status.
IV. Olalusi, who for three years represented Nigeria in the University’s Hall of Fame, delivered valedictory speech as the best graduating Student in the Faculty of Clinical Sciences with a grade point of 5.0CGPA out of 5.0CGPA possible.
    V. In the same University in the year 2012 another Nigerian student, Ganiyu Sanusi bagged the “Best Student of the year” award at the University’s quiz competition. He graduated as the best student in the faculty with first-class honors and a CGPA of 5.0.
VI. Another Nigeria-born Alonge Olanike Omotola, who in 2010 represented the country on the Russian national research university hall of fame, bagged first-class honors degree in Medicine and Surgery. She was the best Graduating student and valedictorian for that year.
VII. A 24-year-old Nigerian, Uwa Osamede Imafidon, graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington(UTA) in the US with Masters in Microbiology and made a 4.0 CGPA out of the maximum 4.0 CGPA
This is just a small list of incredibly talented young Nigerians that are scattered all over the world pursuing their dreams and proving to be best in their fields. In the next 20 years, these people will be leading the world for sure. Friends, I don’t have any doubt in my mind about the place and future of Nigeria among the comity of nations.
    10. Finally, in all humility. I am not going to allow anybody to forget about Pastor Sunday Adelaja. The only black man in the world that leads a congregation of mostly Caucasians in 50 countries. Below are some facts about Pastor Sunday’s life and ministry.
    • Pastor Sunday is the pastor of the largest Evangelical Church in Europe with a population of
99.9% white Europeans in Kiev Ukraine.
    • His ministry has charity units that feed over 5000 people on a daily basis.
    • Through his ministry over 30 thousand people have been delivered from drug and alcohol
       addictions.
    • He helped raise over 200 millionaires in US dollars in his church, most of whom were former
drug/ alcohol addicts and societal outcasts.
    • He has raised a global movement that is influencing over 70million people around the globe.
    • Branches of his church are in over 50 countries.
    • He has spoken in different nations of the world on National Transformation.
    • Pastor Sunday is one of the few, if not the only African, who has ever spoken in the US
       senate.
    • Pastor Sunday is one of the few African pastors who has spoken on the floor of the UN.
    • He has addressed the Japanese Members of parliament.
    • He has spoken in the Knesset to members of Israeli parliament. The list goes on and on.
    • His ministry has over 500 hundred government officials holding different government
       positions in Ukraine.
    • He has written and published over 300 books and recorded thousands of messages.

Many have challenged me to come to Africa to contribute my quota. Have no doubt about it. I am coming sooner or later. Right now I am busy fighting the demons, forces of evil and principalities of Europe and Russia. But, in the meanwhile, I am also thinking about my beloved county Nigeria and mother Africa for which I am developing some grand plans and projects. By the grace of God, by the time I am privileged to come to Africa, everything I have achieved so far would dwarf compared to what I would be doing for the African continent by Gods grace.

Now on a personal note, I would like to say that when I was growing up in Africa, I never saw anything special about myself that could distinguish me from the millions of kids in my nation. As a matter of fact, there are still so many millions of Sunday Adelajas wasting away in their villages and hamlets without any sort of recognition whatsoever.
I was destined to be in their number if not for divine grace. Whenever I visit Nigeria I see myself in all those young men. I see myself in those barefooted boys and girls running about the streets with protruding stomachs without shirts, hawking one product or the other for survival. That was me!
In fact, I still count it the biggest miracle of my life when a distant relative paid off my fifty naira WAEC fee (Final high school exams). Otherwise I was on my way out into the world without a high school certificate, because of fifty naira that my whole family could not come up with. Friends, believe me mine was not the only case. Cases like this abound in their millions all over Nigeria and Africa.
Many of them are wasted in the villages and farms of the continent. The Emeagwalis, the Adelajas, the Chimamandas, the Ogunlesis, the Dangotes, the Imafidons, the Okoyas etc. Imagine what awaits Nigeria when all our potential is harnessed towards the development of every Citizen, Nigeria, Africa and the world at large.
I HAVE NO DOUBT THAT NIGERIA WILL ONE DAY LEAD OUR WORLD!
This article is called WHEN NIGERIA TEACHES AMERICA. But in the same vein, it could easily be called: The Next World Super Power or When Africa Leads the World.
I see that many people who read my articles can’t seem to understand the reason for my passion about Nigeria. I have seen the future of this country.
"Let others lead small lives, but not you.
Let others argue over small things, but not you.
Let others cry over small hurts, but not you.
Let others leave their future in someone else's hands, but not you."
    - Jim Rohn
Besides, I have been privileged to compete in universities where we had students from 99 countries of the world and a Nigerian was leading the pack. This is not unusual as seen in the stories above. In over 60 countries of the world where I have been, Nigerians are always the head and not the tail, the first and not the last.
I remember in 2005 while in Seoul South Korea. Some South Koreans scientists told me they carried out an experiment, which showed that Nigerians have one of the 3 top IQ’s in the world.
Nigerians are resilient, hardworking, passionate, enterprising and aggressive even though most people tend to unfairly emphasize only the negative part of Nigerians, but there is much more to Nigerians than negative tendencies. I admit we are not without our demons, yet as said by Mario Andretti
"If everything is under control, you are not going fast enough."
Can you imagine, a country where there is NO functioning electricity 24 hours? What will begin to happen if all our citizens have a 100% electricity supply? If Nigerians could come top in all the above listed areas of life, without any basic amenities. Imagine then what will happen if they were to have all these things.
Friends, can you imagine what would happen if every Nigerian child, in every village is raised up in a sanitized environment, with good nutrition, libraries, water supply, transportation system, equal opportunities, access to money, education, good health facilities etc. We don’t have much yet, still we are leading the world. What will happen if all the above mentioned facilities are in place?
We know the long list of our failures, despite all the things we lack as a nation, yet we perform. Now imagine what could have been. Today Nigerian’s economy is ranked number 26 in the world.
But many that are first shall be last; and the last shall be first. Matt 19:30
I am convinced that if we get just one thing right which is electricity. Our GDP growth will double from 6% yearly to 12% which will propel us to become one of the top 3 countries in the world in the next 20 years.
I believe in Nigeria, that is why I would not compromise nor refrain from speaking the whole truth and nothing but the truth. The truth that will be able to set us free from the shackles of our weaknesses and inadequacies and propel us into our glorious destiny.
NIGERIA SHALL INDEED ONE DAY TEACH THE WORLD
"Let others lead small lives, but not you.
Let others argue over small things, but not you.
Let others cry over small hurts, but not you.
Let others leave their future in someone else's hands, but not you."

“Who Is Filling My Emotional Tank?"

Our secrets will kill us. They will haunt our dreams, cloud our plans, and distort our relationships. We may harbor secrets because the truth about a single evil past act or a continuing bad habit is too shameful to tell, or we may keep our secrets hidden because we don’t have any real friends who will genuinely listen. Either way, we remain alone, isolated, and desperate to stay hidden.

Kill us? you might object. Surely it’s not that serious. Sometimes it is. When leaders have no place to vent their frustrations and no one to understand their pain, they internalize all the hurt, fear, confusion, and anger. Some experience severe physiological problems that can result in prolonged disease and premature death. And others give up completely. Suicide can become an attractive alternative for leaders who can’t see any light in their future. They feel utter isolation and abject hopelessness. When I need gas for my car, I go to a gas station. When I need food, I go to a grocery store or restaurant. Every leader needs to ask: “Who is filling my emotional tank? Who is giving me the sustenance of hope, joy, and understanding?”

Leaders in business, nonprofits, and churches desperately need to find someone who has no agenda except to listen without judging and love without any strings attached. The existential angst of hopelessness and despair can only be addressed in community—close relationships with at least one, preferably a few, who genuinely cares for us. Nothing less will do. Almost three out of four pastors say they regularly think of leaving the ministry,[1] many because they don’t have a single close friend. Only a few have been loners all their lives. Most of them had wonderful, meaningful connections in the past, but something happened: people moved away, the stress of the job sucked the time and life out of one or the other or both, people got too busy and stopped calling and having coffee, a simple misunderstanding grew into an irreparable schism, or betrayal shattered a trusted bond. Whatever the cause, most pastors have no one to lean on, no safety valve, no understanding ear, and no shoulder to cry on.

Pain can only be effectively managed in a trusting, affirming, honest community—not necessarily a large community, but at least a few people who genuinely understand. Most leaders have to endure seasonal storms that last for a while and then subside. For pastors, however, the storms never stop. The torrents keep coming. Without a strong, supportive community, pastors wither away under the pressure. Consider the following questions:
  • Who in your life “gets you” and doesn’t think you’re weak or strange when you wrestle with the complexities of your role?
  • Who listens to you without feeling compelled to give you advice?
  • Who asks second and third questions to draw you out instead of giving pat answers, simple prescriptions, and easy formulas?
  • Who is your safe haven so you can be completely honest and open?
  • Who fills your spiritual and emotional gas tank?
The answer to these questions identifies your pain partner—a most cherished friend. In my consulting, I strive to be a safe person with whom people can honestly share their pain.
Stressed-out people are fragile, brittle, and prickly. They aren’t usually the most patient people, but keeping friends requires the trait of bearing with people when they are annoying, difficult, and defensive—people just like us! We need wisdom to know when to call a friend on his foolishness and when to let it slide. If it’s a recurring problem or one that can cause irreparable harm, we need to step in and speak up and then bear with our friend while he processes what we’ve said. But more often we need to let mildly offensive words evaporate in the warmth of our love and understanding. If God nicked us for every foolish, selfish, or offensive thing we thought or said, we’d never have a minute to think about anything else. God bears with us all day, every day. His Spirit very carefully picks the moments to convict us. We should do the same with our friends. A lot of the time, we just need to shut up and be supportive. That’s bearing with those who are hurt, brittle, or annoying.

We need to invest our hearts and our time in rebuilding a relationship that has been broken. And if we’re friends long enough, misunderstanding and conflict are inevitable. Healing doesn’t just happen. In the human body, red blood cells constantly carry nutrients to every part of the body, and when there’s a sickness or a wound, the white cells rush the body’s healing properties to the site. We invest in the friendship by focusing now on what’s good and admirable about our friend—instead of clobbering him in our hearts like we did before we starting the healing process. Remember what brought laughter and meaning before the break. Camp out there again, and see if the fires are rekindled.

When we’re in pain, the last thing we may want to do is pick up the phone and call someone to ask for help. Everything in us screams, “Hide! Don’t be vulnerable! Protect yourself at all costs!” That voice sounds reasonable, but it leads to further isolation, misery, and despair.
When you’re in trouble, don’t wait. Pick up the phone. Call someone and ask for help. It’s essential for your mental and emotional health, and it’s necessary for you to be the leader, spouse, and parent you want to be.

I'M GRATEFUL! Gracias! Gracias!!

“This knows also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, UNTHANKFUL, unholy,  Without natural affection, truce-breakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, high-minded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God”
(2Timothy 3:1-4).

As I read this passage of Scripture today, I discovered afresh that one of the negative attitudes that people will develop towards God, people, organization, system etc. in the days we live in is UNTHANKFULNESS (INGRATITUDE or lack of APPRECIATION) for any or all acts of kindness. Then it dawned on me that it is one thing to show your appreciation to people secretly with a little note or card but it is another thing to openly or publicly acknowledge the blessings of God in our lives through people. Now this will become my habit henceforth, every January, I will take time to openly appreciate the people that make most impacts in my life and family the previous year even if I have done that during the year. When I began to compile the list for 2014, I was amazed! I know some people don’t like to be appreciated openly but guess what, sometimes it is not about the other person but about you and your covenant principle with God. I will do this in categories.

Mike Murdock said one of the greatest honors and privileges a man/woman (especially preachers) can receive is to be asked by another person to mount the podium/pulpit to speak to others. It means they believe and receive your ministry, gifting and your person. I want to appreciate among many these few ministries/churches/organizations/schools that provided me the platform to physically minister, preach, teach, encourage, instruct others in 2014:
  • Pastors Gbemi and Richard Olajide, Christ-Touch Ministries, Texas. I’m grateful for the relationship that started between my family and yours strangely. You will forever be our brother/sister in Him.
  •  Bishop and First Lady Tony Osuobeni, New Season Assembly, Columbus. I still remember the message, “Developing a Winning Spirit”, I was terribly blessed myself. Thanks for the opportunity.
  •  Pastors Dupe & Yemi Olumuyide, Kings Ambassadors Ministries, Ohio. Your Dare to Dream conference was a blessing. Thanks for the privilege.
  •  Pastors Simbo Odunaiya & Opeyemi Adesanya, Christ International Community Church, Ohio. The message of Rejoicing became my song for the rest of the year. Thanks for the opportunity.
  •  Pastors Abimbola & Sanya Oyedola, Sanctuary of Hope Church, Columbus. I enjoyed leading prayer sessions at your meetings. Thanks for the relationship.
  •  Pastor Opeyemi Bornstar Adesanya, Yoruba Breakthrough Service, Ohio. What an opportunity to minister in song in my native dialect. Most grateful to God.
  •  Pastors Amos & Bosede Adetunji, Christ Harvest Church, Columbus. You resurrected my Yoruba speaking ability again through your ministry. You are blessed and I’m thankful.
  • The Entire Planning Committee for AACHSA Reunion 2014 (North America Chapter). I literally saw the fulfillment of God’s promise that I will stand before kings to declare His counsel. Thanks for the opportunity to bring a word during the last day of the Reunion in Ohio and it was a great honor to have the Olori and HRM Oba (Prof.) Akinola A. Owosekun, the Asotun of Isotun-Ijesha at the meeting.
HRM Oba Akinola and his Wife (5th and 6th from LHS)
  •  Pastors Florence & Emmanuel Inah, Winners Christian Ministries, Ohio. Thanks for the opportunity.
  •  The entire leadership team of Ibadan Varsity Christian Union, Postgraduate Fellowship, University of Ibadan, Nigeria. What a privilege to stand before the saints of God on campus to minister the word of life. I’m grateful!
L-R: Dr. Praise Adeyemo, Me and the President

Group Picture with Some of the Fellowship Members
  • Pastors Bukola & Bunmi A. Paul, Word Garden Chapel, Ibadan Nigeria. I’m grateful for the relationship and the privilege. You will forever be part of my family.
Pastor Bunmi and his lovely family with the Kuyes in Ibadan
  • Pastors Evelyn & Abraham Raymond, End-Time Triumphant Church, Ibadan Nigeria.

What about schools and organizations? In 2014, my family is grateful to God for the privilege to teach and impart knowledge to students through their platforms. Among such institutions are:

Some of the students during the 2014 Bridge Program

How about hundreds of people all around the globe that yielded the platform of their hearts to receive our ministry through Facebook, Whatsapp, Blogs, Emails, Text Messages, Phone Conversations etc. I'm grateful to God for your life and constant feedback in 2014. You will forever by my brothers and sisters.

Jerry Stephens
I know this might sound strange to some people but I'm thankful to the people that provided some major services to me in 2014. The guy that cut my hair making sure I don't appear unkept. Thanks for your care. My good friend and business partner, Jerry Stephens of Ministry Consulting Group who prepared our taxes last year. I'm grateful for your help.Without the help of a team of people led by our wonderful brother and friend, "Engr." Niyi Ajibade and Big Aunty Lola Akinrinade, it would have been difficult for my family to have a memorable experience during our recent trip. Thanks for your love always.

I'm also thankful to our dentist, physicians, the librarians, the guys that fixed our cars (@Midas), the guys that delivered our mails to ensure we are not late on bills, the guys that cleaned our carpets for us to keep my wife from being stressed out (laughs), the teachers at Polaris Christian Academy that impart the knowledge (of God and academics) to our kids and of course their Sunday School teachers, and the great worship team at our local assembly that made the worship of God big in our hearts every Sunday in 2014 etc. We are grateful to y'all.

I'm also grateful to Dish Network for providing the platform for me to be of help to hundreds of people in America through service. I meditate more on this quote by George Washington Carver because of my work through Dish, “How far you go in life depends on your being tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving and tolerant of the weak and strong. Because someday in your life you will have been all of these”.

Finally, I want to appreciate all the great men and women that God used to speak words of encouragement, grace, power into our lives and family directly or indirectly in 2014. The list is huge but I will mention few names:

  • My biological mum, Mrs. Mary Kuye, who constantly say to us, "The grace that distinguish men in their generation, heaven will release upon you." We are grateful for your life ma'am.
  • My Parents-in-Love, Daddy and Mummy Okeniyi. Your main prayer every time is, "E o ri aanu gba" (You will always enjoy the mercy of God). You are simply the best!
  • My Pastors and Mentors (both near and in proxy) - Pastors Sam & Funmi Adeyemi, Pastor A.T. Raymond, Pastor CNS Prince, Bishop & First Lady Osuobeni, Pst. Femi Oyewusi, Pastors Yemisi and Ayo Popoola (Best Uncle&Aunty),  Rev. Bolaji Adeisrael, Pastor Pertru Okebugwu, Dr. Henry Jones, Bishop T.D. Jakes, Bishop David Oyedepo etc. Thanks for giving to the Lord, you are forever part of our family.

Did I say finally before? this supposed to be the final one. Once again, I'm thankful to the Almighty God that kept His covenant of peace, protection, life etc over my life and family in 2014. Only You I Will Serve, I have no other God.

NOTE: If I did not mention you or your service in my gratitude note, forgive me, it is not deliberate. Gracias!

LESSONS FROM MY FIRST WINTER (SNOW) EXPERIENCE

I have not done this in a while but I feel like sharing this with someone. Of course it is still winter time in Ohio and many of us are snowed in. Some by choice and others compulsorily because you have to stay home with your kids since the schools are closed. This morning, I decided to get some exercise through clearing the snow on my driveway and we all had fun doing that. As we continued with the exercise, my mind went back to my experience years back during my first winter in the States (2004). It was not pretty at all but God taught me some lessons that I want to share with you.

I believe it was one of those shopping days in December when most of the stores close early, and we never knew because we were new to the system. Our daughter (Blessing) was just about 3 months old and we had to do some grocery shopping at the store. Then we realized the store was going to close in less than 40mins. I told my wife I was going to go start the car for a while and then come back to get them. Initially, I thought it might not be too cold in the car, may be we should just go together since the baby was well wrapped, but my wife said I should go and come back for them. Thank God I listened because what happened next could have been so funny if we were outside in the cold together.

I got to the car and tried to open but the key would not go in. I never knew the weather could be so cold that some locks will just freeze. I never knew anything about antifreeze because it was my first winter experience. I struggled to force the key in but nothing happened. Then I beckoned on a guy passing by to help. He tried as hard as he could but our efforts were fruitless. He suggested I get hot water or antifreeze in the store to spray on the key hole. By this time, I was freezing myself because of the kind of jacket I had on. Remember, it was my first winter.

I headed back to the store to go do as I have been instructed, guess what, my wife and the baby and many others were already helped towards the door and no one is allowed to go into the store but going out. I could not get close to them to explain the situation we were in. Every other person brought their car close to the door to pick their family but I could not. My plan was not to start looking for any antifreeze but to quickly grab a soda in the store, pour the content away and rush to the rest room to get hot water (remember I was fresh from Africa, laughs) but the door was locked. I was stranded outside in the cold but at least my wife and the baby were inside.

After a while, I stood in front of the store wondering how in the world I was going to come out of this mess. I had no phone on me to call for help. I felt empty, helpless, and powerless and without any hope. Then I remembered a statement by Mike Murdock many years back, “There will never be a time in your life that you will have nothing!” It dawned on me that I can tap into the supernatural help of God. I may not have my phone to make a call but my mouth can still dial “Heaven’s 9-1-1” and the line is never busy. In less than a minute, I said something like this, “Lord, help me to open this car”. As I walked towards the car, I was hoping somebody with antifreeze will come to my aid or some kind of magic will happen. As I stood in front of the door, I did not want to use the key again since earlier attempts had failed, and I was afraid the key might break. But I sensed in my heart that I should use the same key again this one time! That was it! The door opened effortlessly. A thousand messages could not have preached that to me.

Few lessons to learn from this story (even though there are many I would have loved to share with you):
1. Learn to Listen to Your Wife (if you are married or planning to be in the future): When my wife gently suggested I should go out alone to bring the car, even though I struggled with the idea a little bit, if I did not heed that advice, the three of us would have been locked outside the store and any effort to send them back into the store may not work since the store operates by the “Law of Medes and Persians” which cannot be repealed (Dan. 6:8-NIV).
2. Don’t Feel Ashamed or Less Important to Ask for Help Sometime: One of my favorite scriptures is Matt. 7:7, “Ask and you shall be given…” That means sometime you need to ask for help no matter how strong you think you are. It does not mean you are weak but some situations in life are wired in such a way that you will require help outside of yourself to pull through. Even though the guy that was gracious enough to honor my gentle beckon could not open the car, but the fact that he overcame all fears of the unknown (he may have thought, this guy might be up to something, what of if he is trying to break into someone’s car, he does not look like me – white, brown, Latino etc) and joined me in the struggle meant a lot to me. Remember, it is not the outcome of your faith that pleases God but the process of exercising your faith. I guess that guy walked away feeling disappointed that he could not open the door (expected or desired result) but heaven just celebrated an unnoticed hero that rendered help to a stranger who looked nothing like him. (Please Note: The simple fact that I said you should not feel ashamed to ask for help does not mean you should become a “parasite” that prey on people’s generosity to enrich yourself. That is not dignifying and it sucks!)
3. God Can Still Use The Same KEY: Often times, we are advised not to use the same skill, method, approach or instrument that we have used in the past and failed. It is perceived as insanity. I totally agree with that notion but there are certain miracles or breakthroughs that God will bring your way by simply acting in obedience to ridiculous instruction. A typical example that comes to mind is the story of Samson in the Bible. Samson was a man of might and exploits, an unusual poet, and he can give difficult riddles that make people of his generation wonder. It was recorded that at a particular time, he needed to fight the enemy that came upon him and “the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon him…finding a fresh jawbone of a donkey, he grabbed it and struck down a thousand men” (Judges 15:14-15). That was a key in his hand! He used it and did something funny in verse 17, “he threw away the jawbone”. I don’t know what that key is to you and in your own context- a skill, a relationship, business idea, approach in ministry etc. Samson had another challenge and he dialed Heaven’s 9-1-1, “Because he was thirsty, he cried out to the Lord” and the same jawbone is what was needed to perfect his miracle, “But God clave an hollow place in the jaw, and there came water thereout; and when he had drunk, his spirit came again, and he revived” (v.19-KJV). Never forget that we are finite beings created by an Infinite Being. God is able to perform a miracle in a thousand way because He is infinite in His ways. He’s got a thousand ways to make you a millionaire and all you can think of are just one or two ways. He can choose to open my car by using another means but I was not expecting the door to open at that particular time with that same key at that moment. Let me end this short story with this last point:
4. Faith Always Win: Someone has defined the acronym for faith as Finding Answers In The Heart. It is one thing for me to call unto God, it is another thing for me to be calm enough to hear the ridiculous instruction in my heart, “Go use the key again and stop looking for another help”. Even though I knew I was eventually going to need the key to open the car and start the engine, but because of the struggles I had with the key, it was not one of my options to try again at that moment. May be after I would have used antifreeze or hot water, then I can use it. But deep down in my heart, I heard the voice of faith saying, “Use the same KEY now!” God dropped the answer to my predicament in my heart and I acted upon it. Don’t despise or ignore the thoughts in your heart because your heart is GOOD!

In closing, even though my first winter was funny and challenging, now I can have some fun in the snow with my little buddy (Isaac).
2014 Winter
It’s my prayer that whatever KEY you have used in the past and it seems abandoned, the favor of God will rest upon it and it will bring your next breakthrough for you and your family. Never forget, no matter what you are going through, YOU ARE EXPECTED TO WIN. On behalf of my Essence of Joy – Oludolapo, my graceful kids – Blessing, Faith and Isaac, I am saying you are blessed and highly graced. Love you.
In His ever increasing love,
Sam Kuye, M.Div.
